Woodworking Metal Detectors

Metal Detectors for Woodworkers

Denailing Metal Detectors (Woodworking Metal Detectors) are specialized to find metal inside wood using electronic detection coils designed to find small metal objects such as nails, screws, wire, etc.  Unlike typical security wands that are designed to detect large items such as knives, guns and other metal items, the most popular Denailing metal detector is the one with a laser indicator that draws an easily visible red line across the point of detection. A laser line denailing metal detector allows users to easily pinpoint the precise location of metal so as to reduce damage to wood while removing buried metal.

Denailing metal detectors, such as the Little Wizard and Lumber Wizard, are valuable tools for woodworkers. They help save money, protect tools, and prevent injuries by detecting buried metal objects inside reclaimed or recycled wood before cutting, drilling, or shaping it. Here's how denailing metal detectors can be beneficial:
  1. Protecting cutting tools: Cutting tools like saw blades, drill bits, and planer knives can be damaged when they come into contact with hidden nails, screws, or other metal objects embedded in the wood. Replacing or repairing these tools can be costly. By using a denailing metal detector, you can identify and remove hidden metal before working with the wood, reducing the risk of damage to your tools.
  2. Preventing injuries: Coming into contact with metal objects while working with wood can lead to accidents and injuries. For example, a nail hidden in a board could cause a saw blade to kick back or shatter, potentially injuring the woodworker. Using a metal detector to find and remove hidden metal can reduce the risk of such accidents and help ensure a safer work environment.
  3. Saving time and materials: Wood with hidden metal objects can become unusable if the metal damages your cutting tools or if the wood is split or cracked during cutting. By detecting metal before starting work, you can avoid wasting time and materials on unusable pieces.
  4. Enhancing the quality of the finished product: Removing hidden metal objects ensures that the finished project is free of imperfections caused by metal interference, such as scratches or dents. This results in a more professional-looking end product.
  5. Preserving the value of reclaimed wood: Reclaimed wood often has unique characteristics, such as color, texture, and grain patterns, which can add value and beauty to woodworking projects. By using a metal detector to locate and remove hidden metal, you can preserve the quality and value of the reclaimed wood.
In conclusion, denailing metal detectors can save money and protect tools by detecting hidden metal in wood, preventing damage to cutting tools and reducing the risk of accidents and injuries. They are a valuable investment for any woodworker looking to work safely, efficiently, and with high-quality results.

A Powerful Metal Detector Designed Specifically For Wood Workers! The New LUMBER WIZARD 5 Auto-Tuning Laser Line Woodworking Metal Detector is the latest version of Wizard Industries' flagship woodworking metal detector.

Using a denailing metal detector, like the Little Wizard or Lumber Wizard, is a simple process that can help you detect hidden metal objects in wood before you start working on it. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use a denailing metal detector:
  1. Turn on the metal detector: Begin by turning on the metal detector according to the instructions. Most detectors have a power button or switch that activates the device.
  2. Adjust sensitivity (if applicable): Little Wizard metal detectors allow you to adjust the sensitivity settings to fine-tune the detection process. Consult the user manual for the Little Wizard to understand how to adjust the sensitivity. The Lumber Wizard Denailing metal detector has automatic tuning so all that is needed is to stand away from large metal objects and power the unit on holding it stready and away from metal. After powered on the Lumber Wizard will take a few seconds to automatically calibrate. Once it has calibrated automatically scan several small pieces of metal to become familiare with its detection capabilites.
  3. Hold the metal detector properly: Hold the metal detector with the scanning surface (usually a flat, wide area) facing the wood. Make sure your hand is gripping the handle or designated grip area to avoid interference with the detection process.
  4. Begin scanning the wood: Slowly move the scanning surface of the metal detector across the wood in a systematic pattern. You may choose to go back and forth or up and down, but ensure you cover the entire surface area of the wood piece.
  5. Listen for an alert: When the metal detector identifies metal within the wood, it will typically emit a sound or vibration to alert you. Some models may also have a visual indicator, like a light or a display. The Lumber Wizard as a laser line indicator that projects a red laser line on to the surface of where the buried metal is located. The Little Wizard emits a sound and a bank of LED lights illuminate.
  6. Mark the location: When you receive an alert, mark the spot where the metal was detected with a pencil or other non-permanent marker. This will help you remember where to remove the metal later.
  7. Confirm the detection: After marking the location, scan the same area again to confirm the presence of metal. If the detector alerts you again, it is likely that metal is indeed present.
  8. Remove the metal object: Once you have identified and marked the locations of hidden metal, carefully remove the metal objects using pliers, a claw hammer, or other appropriate tools. Be cautious while removing the metal to avoid damaging the wood or injuring yourself.
  9. Re-scan the area: After removing the metal, scan the area again with the metal detector to ensure all hidden metal objects have been removed.
  10. Proceed with woodworking: Once you have scanned the entire piece of wood and removed any detected metal objects, you can proceed with your woodworking project with confidence that your tools are protected and your work environment is safe.
Always refer to the user manual of your specific denailing metal detector for any additional instructions or recommendations specific to that model.
